History of Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle was built between 1919 and 1947 by William Randolph Hearst and his wife Millicent Willson Hearst on land that had been owned by the Hearst family since 1865, when multiple Mexican land grants were purchased by William's father, George Hearst. William Randolph Hearst hired architect Julia Morgan to design the magnificent hilltop estate, which served as his private residence until his death in 1951. After his passing, Millicent sold off much of the castle grounds to the state of California which opened it up to the public in 1958 as a museum and California state park. Since then, the iconic San Simeon State Historical Monument has welcomed millions of visitors from all around the world.

About the Hearst Castle Estate

Hearst Castle stands atop La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill) and offers breathtaking views of San Simeon Bay and the surrounding area. This historic estate features 165 rooms, 127 acres of gardens and terraces, multiple pools, and over 20 miles of roads. It took 28 years to complete Hearst Castle, with its construction beginning in 1919 and ending in 1947.

The original building consisted of six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a library, but over the years three more buildings were added, each with its own distinct style and design. It was also home to one of America's largest private zoos, which included lions, tigers, bears, antelope, buffalo, deer, elk and much more. The castle underwent numerous renovations during this time period as well; each renovation helped bring the estate closer to William Randolph Hearst’s original vision.

Today, Hearst Castle sports 165 rooms spread across multiple buildings—Casa Grande, Casa del Sol, Casa del Monte, and Casa del Mar—each with its own unique character and charm. In addition to its beautiful exterior design, Hearst Castle also features a vast collection of European antiques and artwork that were collected by William Randolph Hearst himself during his lifetime.
